The Koepel
The former Koepel prison of Haarlem has undergone a remarkable transformation. Following a civic initiative by Haarlem entrepreneur Jacqueline van de Sande to give the Koepel a public function, architect Andre van Stigt carefully restored and revitalised the monumental building from 1901.
The transformation is not only architectural. The Koepel has evolved from a closed penitentiary into an open public tech campus where students, talent, professionals and entrepreneurs come together to study, collaborate and build the future of their careers and businesses.
Today, the Koepel houses Filmkoepel with six cinema halls, a bar, restaurant and hotel, the gaming museum Level One, Haarlem Campus with up to 650 bachelor and master students, workshop spaces, a media hub with film, photography and podcast studios, office spaces, digitalisation labs, office studios and over 1,000 m² of co-work and learning space.
